Understanding the Tribes

There were 12 Tribes of Israel who inherited the promised land; plus Levi, who had no land of its own but was interspersed among the Twelve Tribes.

Many traditions have sprung up over the years concerning the 12 stones. Victor is a jeweller and he has researched the 12 most probable stones given in their biblical descriptions, including only stones known to have been available in Egypt at that time; and eliminating any greater than 7 mohs which are too dense to engrave.

House of Issachar

Issachar means ‘a man of wages’, ‘a man of recompense’ (Genesis 30:18)  – understanding the value of giving as well as receiving.

Blessed to be a strong donkey; a bearer of burdens by Jacob (Genesis 49:14) – he lived at peace with his neighbours.

Moses foresaw a special relationship between Issachar and Zebulun whereby Zebulun would travel allowing Issachar to remain at home creating a safe environment for Zebulun to return.  Together they would call the people to offer sacrifices of righteousness; for they would feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand (Deuteronomy 33:18-19)

Issachar was known as the Torah Tribe because they understood the times and seasons and feasts of the LORD so our House of Issachar meet on the eve of Shabbat and spend time studying a weekly Parasha from the Old and New Testaments.

House of Judah

To be thankful – Judah means ‘to be praised’ (Genesis 29:35).

Blessed to be ‘a young lion’ by Jacob (Genesis 49:9) while Moses declared that the LORD would be a help to Judah against his foes (Deuteronomy 33:7).

Judges 20:18 as “Judah went first” in battle, so our House of Judah contends for us with spiritual warfare and worship.

House of Zebulun

Zebulun means ‘to dwell’ (Genesis 30:20) in the sense of being successful financially and creating an inheritance for future generations. Jacob blessed Zebulun that he would dwell by the seashore which would have been an important centre for commerce.

Moses foresaw a special relationship between Issachar and Zebulun whereby Zebulun would travel allowing Issachar to remain at home creating a safe environment for Zebulun to return.  Together with Issachar, Zebulun would call the people to offer sacrifices of righteousness; for they would feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand (Deuteronomy 33:18-19)

House of Reuben

Called to exemplify sonship; displaying traits of the Father – Reuben means ‘look, a son!’ (Genesis 29:32).

Moses blessed the House of Reuben saying “Let Reuben live and not die, nor his men be few” (Deuteronomy 33:6).  Reuben understood the importance of maintaining good relationships within the family.

Our House of Reuben meet once a month on a Saturday evening for a simple fellowship meal along with partaking of the bread and wine.

House of Gad

Gad means ‘fortune’ or ‘wealth’ (Genesis 30:11), a reminder that people matter and children are valuable in the sight of the Father.

Jacob understood that Gad would be attacked by raiders; but he also knew that Gad would not be defeated, he would rise and attack the heels of those raiders! (Genesis 49:19).  Moses recognised that Gad was an important tribe when he blessed Gad as “he chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there” (Deuteronomy 33:21).

Joshua 4:12 records how the tribe of Gad faithfully stood alongside all of the other tribes helping them gain ground; not simply enjoying their own fortune.

House of Simeon

Called to hear and obey – Simeon means ‘listening diligently’ (Genesis 29:33). Simeon is about intimacy. 2 Chronicles 7:14 ‘if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face..”. Simeon brings the challenge to lean into what the Holy Spirit is revealing and walk in God’s ways.

House of Benjamin

As ‘son of (the) right hand’ (Genesis 35:18), Benjamin is a calling to ensure that the Father’s wishes are known.

Many avoid confrontation, but Benjamin has an appetite to devour the enemy (Genesis 49:27), and a strong sense of the moral obligation to share the spoils of war.  Concerning Benjamin, Moses said “may the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him; God shields him all day long; and upon His shoulders he rests” (Deuteronomy 33:12).

Benjamin is the Tribe of legacy; making way for future generations. Esther, Mordecai, and the apostle Paul were all descended from the Tribe of Benjamin.

House of Ephraim

Ephraim means a ‘covering’ or ‘bandage’ (Genesis 41:52).  It is a calling to shield and protect those who cannot defend themselves and it carries a responsibility to ensure that wounds heal and not fester.

Moses declared that the land of Joseph’s sons would be blessed by the LORD with the precious dew from heaven, with the bountiful harvest from the sun, with the choice gifts of the land and the favour of God (Deuteronomy 33:13-17). As a repairer of the breaches the House of Ephraim encompasses a healing ministry.

House of Manasseh

Called to forgive and forget – Manasseh means ‘causing to forget’ (Genesis 41:51).

Moses declared that the land of Joseph’s sons would be blessed by the LORD with the precious dew from heaven, with the bountiful harvest from the sun, with the choice gifts of the land and the favour of God (Deuteronomy 33:13-17).  Manasseh is about reconciliation and intercessory prayer.

House of Dan

Called to make decisions based upon divine law – Dan is derived from the Hebrew word for ‘judge’ (Genesis 30:6).

Anointed to provide justice for his people by Jacob (Genesis 49:16), Dan took up the rear guard as the tribes gained ground, ready to stop the enemy from picking off those who might easily have been forgotten.  Jacob described Dan as being like a snake ready to startle a horse; Moses called him “a lion’s cub, leaping out of Bashan” (Deuteronomy 33:22)

Dan carries a strong creative anointing – Aholiab, who was called alongside Bezalel to furnish the Tabernacle, was from the tribe of Dan (Exodus 31:6).

House of Asher

Called to be a ‘happy one’ (Genesis 30:13) – Asher means ‘blessed’ and ‘highly favoured’!

Blessed to be able to supply rich food fit for a king (Genesis 49:20).  Moses said “may Asher be the most blessed of sons; the most favoured among his brothers (Deuteronomy 33:24).

House of Naphtali

Blessed by Jacob to be like a doe set free that bears beautiful words (Genesis 49:21). Naphtali received a special anointing for communication. As part of the rear guard alongside Dan and Asher, Naphtali understood that clear communication was vital for the tribes to take ground.
